Today and Sunday. This is opening weekend at Hyland Hills Water World, which is celebrating its 30th season. This summer, Water World is reintroducing Thunder Bay, its gigantic wave pool, which originally opened in 1984. The new Thunder Bay wave technology uses highly pressurized forced air to move the water in new ways that result in the perfect ocean-style wave. Named as one of the Top Ten Best Water Parks in America by the Travel Channel, Water World offers 45 attractions on a 67-acre site. Gates open at 10 a.m. The park remains open until 6 p.m., weather permitting. Parking is free. The park is west of I-25 at 88th Avenue and Pecos Street in Federal Heights. Admission is $28.95 for kids, $33.95 for adults and $5 for seniors. Discount tickets are available at all King Soopers locations.
Sunday. Get a speedy start to your Sunday at the Mile High Mile race. Runners of all ages are invited, but unlike the usual family fun run, this one’s for real — organizers want everyone to try for their best times. The race is run in waves, divided by age group, with prizes for the winners of each group. Wheelchair and elite racers have special divisions, and families can do an untimed mile together. Proceeds benefit The Greenway Foundation. The race starts at 8 a.m. near the state Capitol at 14th Avenue and Grant Street. Registration is $25 for adults age 18 and older, $20 for kids age 17 and younger. Race-day registration starts at 6:45 a.m. Sunday with $5 added to the regular registration fee.
