Jason Marquis’ performance prior to Friday night never had much to do with causing Clint Hurdle’s dismissal as manager earlier in the day. And Marquis gave his new manager, Jim Tracy, nothing to complain about in his Rockies’ debut.
Marquis got the Tracy Era off to a nice, smooth start with an eight-inning gem in Colorado’s 3-0 victory over San Diego at Coors Field.
Scattering six hits over the eight innings, Marquis upped his record to 7-3.
Yorvit Torrealba was the hitting star for the Rockies. If not for a questionable error given to Padres third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff in the bottom of the sixth inning, Torrealba would have had his third hit and third RBI of the game.
Torrealba’s hard grounder into the hole on the left side eluded Kouzmanoff and scored Todd Helton and Ryan Spilborghs to give the Rockies a 3-0 lead.
The Rockies got only two hits off longtime nemesis Chris Young in his six innings of work, but they benefited from some wildness by the right-hander.
Huston Street closed out the ninth for the Rockies to get the save.
