DALLAS—Southwest Airlines says it will let passengers carry small dogs and cats onboard for a $75 fee each way.

The airline also will start charging a $25 fee for unaccompanied minors, and is raising its fee from $25 to $50 for checking a third piece of luggage or an overweight bag. Southwest allows two bags to be checked for free.

Officials say pets must be in a carrier that fits underneath the seat, and the carrier will count as the customer’s carryon bag.

Chief Executive Gary Kelly says the new fees are “a charge for items that are truly an extra service.”

The new fees will take effect for flights departing June 17 or after.

Dallas-based Southwest is the third-largest carrier at Denver International Airport.
