MONTREAL — Jacques Martin was hired as coach of the Canadiens on Monday, leaving his general manager’s job with the Florida Panthers for a storied NHL franchise that was swept in the first round of the playoffs.

The hire ends speculation the Canadiens would offer the job to former Avalanche goalie Patrick Roy.

Martin replaces Montreal general manager Bob Gainey behind the bench. Gainey took over after firing Guy Carbonneau on March 9.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to join this organization,” Martin said at a news conference. “When you look at the players who are in the organization, there is a strong nucleus, a strong base.”

Footnotes.

Hart Trophy finalist Pavel Datsyuk (foot) is likely to remain out of Detroit’s lineup in Game 3. Datsyuk was the NHL’s fourth- leading scorer, with 97 points during the season. Kris Draper (groin) is feeling better but will likely miss the game because coach Mike Babcock doesn’t want to change the lineup.

• Potential owner Jim Balsillie has filed an application with the league office for the relocation of the Phoenix Coyotes to Hamilton, Ontario, a move expected to happen later this week.
