GREELEY, Colo.—Police say a Greeley woman was attacked in her home by her estranged husband, but she was rescued after her parents became alarmed by they way she answered their questions in a phone call.
Jack Lee Holmes, 41, of Greeley is accused of breaking into his wife’s house Friday while she and her children were out, then ambushing her in her bedroom.
Authorities say Holmes bound her wrists and kept her there overnight, making small cuts in her throat and stomach.
The children were apparently unharmed, though one, a 5-year-old girl, spoke to the woman during the night, police said.
Investigators said Holmes ordered the woman to tell the child, “If Mommy’s not here when you get up in the morning, you take care of the others.”
It wasn’t clear how many children were home.
Police went to the home Saturday after they were called by the woman’s parents, who live in Cheyenne, Wyo.
The parents said they asked their daughter several times what she planned to do that day but she answered each time with “I can’t.”
Police say Holmes fled as they approached the house, but he was apprehended about three blocks away.
He is being held under $1 million bail on suspicion of kidnapping, assault and burglary. The Weld County jail had no information on whether he has a lawyer.
Authorities said Holmes had been arrested last month on suspicion of stalking, menacing and assaulting his estranged wife and was free on bond at the time of last weekend’s incident.
