A state wildlife officer used a tranquilizer dart at around 11 a.m. today to bring down a black bear that had been spotted in Monument Valley Park in downtown Colorado Springs.
The bear was captured near where St. Vrain Street meets the Monument Valley Trail about six hours after a resident reported seeing the animal near Wahsatch Avenue and Boulder Street at about 5:30 a.m. It was spotted again in Acacia Park at 8:10 a.m.
When Colorado Springs police officers started following the bear, it ran into a residential area west of Cascade Avenue, near the Monument Valley Trail.
Officers tracked it through the backyards of homes in the area before the bear disappeared into a woody area. Officers stood guard with rifles along the trail near Boulder Street until Colorado Division of Wildlife officer arrived.
The 100-pound bear will be relocated away from the city.
