BOULDER, Colo.—The Boulder County Sheriff’s office says a hiker found a beheaded bald eagle wrapped in a red cloth with its talons and feathers missing.
Investigators say they have no suspects in the case and are trying to determine how the bald eagle died. Those found guilty of poaching bald eagles face up to a year in prison and a $100,000 fine in Colorado.
The sheriff’s office says the hiker found the bald eagle in Boulder County’s Legion Park Hill last weekend but officials announced the discovery Thursday.
Eagle feathers and talons are sometimes sold in the black market.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Bill Manes called the discovery an oddity and says it seems unlikely that a poacher would leave the eagle’s carcass by a hiking trial and wrapped in a red cloth.
