HOUSTON — Outfielder Carlos Gonzalez’s talent and numbers could not be denied. So it was no surprise that after feasting on Triple-A pitching while playing for Colorado Springs, the Rockies called him up Thursday night. He’ll join the team today in St. Louis.

To make room for Gonzalez, the Rockies optioned outfielder Matt Murton to the Sky Sox.

In another roster move, the club called up right-handed reliever Matt Daley and designated struggling right-handed reliever Jason Grilli for assignment. Daley is coming back from a sprained left foot. Wednesday, in his second rehab appearance, Daley threw a scoreless inning.

Gonzalez, a key component of the Matt Holliday trade, hit .339 for the Sky Sox, belting 10 home runs, 12 doubles and seven triples, with 59 RBIs.

The one kink in the plan is Gonzalez is a left-handed hitter and the Rockies’ roster is already stocked with those in Todd Helton, Brad Hawpe, Ian Stewart and Seth Smith.

“It’s going to be interesting to see how I figure all of that out,” manager Jim Tracy said. “But when you have close to 60 RBIs, I’ll accept the challenge.”

Tulo news.

The MRI on Troy Tulowitzki’s bruised left hand showed no structural damage. He could be back in the starting lineup in a day or two.
