Joe Sacco was hired by the Avalanche Thursday to become their next head coach:
Age: 40
Born: Feb. 4, 1969, in Medford, Mass.
College: Boston University
NHL career: Drafted 71st overall by Toronto in 1987 NHL draft. Played 738 career NHL games with Toronto, Anaheim, Philadelphia, Washington and N.Y. Islanders. Scored 94 goals and 213 points. Retired as a player in 2003. Known as one of the fastest skaters in the league as a player.
Coaching career: Has worked in the Avalanche organization since 2005, first as an assistant with the Lowell (Mass.) Lock Monsters. Became head coach of Lake Erie Monsters (AHL) in 2007.
