GOLDEN, Colo.—A 38-year-old woman deemed insane at the time she tied up and burned her Yorkshire terrier to death has been sentenced to 45 days in jail and 10 years probation.

Tanya Marie Martin pleaded guilty April 22 to aggravated animal cruelty in the October death of her 6-year-old dog named Bobo. She was sentenced Thursday.

Prosecutors say a mental health evaluation determined she was insane at the time of the fire.

District Attorney Scott Storey said in a statement that Martin has a history of mental illness dating back to her teens but had failed to take her medication.

A neighbor told police she found Bobo on top of a burning telephone book on a lighted stove. Bobo died a few days later.

Martin had previously pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
