CARDINALS’ LOHSE ON DISABLED LIST FOR FIRST TIME

ST. LOUIS — Cardinals right-hander Kyle Lohse was placed on the 15-day disabled list for the first time in his career Friday with a forearm injury after he had to leave his latest start early.

“It was a good run,” said Lohse, in his ninth season. “I’ve just got to make sure it gets better than it was before, I guess.”

The Cardinals are going with 12 pitchers for the time being, with infielder Tyler Greene recalled from Triple-A Memphis. Manager Tony La Russa has been carrying 13 pitchers for weeks, preferring a rested bullpen over a fifth bench player.

• La Russa and Twitter reached a settlement in his lawsuit against the site. He sought unspecified damages, claiming an unauthorized page that used his name caused emotional distress by making light of the manager’s DUI charge and two Cardinals pitchers who died in recent seasons.

Surgery will sideline Putz

WASHINGTON — Mets reliever J.J. Putz will have surgery to remove a bone spur and pieces of bone from the back of his right elbow and is expected to miss 10 to 12 weeks.

Picked up in the offseason to lock down the eighth inning ahead of new closer Francisco Rodriguez, Putz is just 1-4 with a 5.22 ERA and two saves for the Mets. He has allowed eight runs and nine hits in 1 1/3 innings in his most recent outings. He complained of pain after Thursday’s game in Pittsburgh.

Footnotes.

• Twins outfielder Michael Cuddyer, out with a sprained index finger, took his first swings in almost a week and could return to the lineup today.

• Slumping Red Sox slugger David Ortiz will get his eyes checked Monday.

• The Marlins put right-hander Anibal Sanchez on the 15-day DL because of a sprained right shoulder and recalled righty Cristhian Martinez from Double-A Jacksonville.

• Blue Jays outfielder Alex Rios apologized after he was caught on video yelling profanities at a fan.
