DENVER—Rugby’s Churchill Cup kicks off in Denver Saturday, the first time the entire tournament has been played in the U.S.

Teams representing England, Argentina, Georgia, Ireland, Canada and the U.S. will compete. The tournament, now in its seventh year, has staged games in the U.S. before but never the full event.

Games will be played in two Denver suburbs: Glendale’s Infinity Park and Commerce City’s Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, home of the Colorado Rapids of the MLS.

The Churchill Cup was established by the English Rugby Football Union, Rugby Canada and USA Rugby to help jump-start the sport in North America.

Plenty of veterans will compete, but the Churchill Cup is essentially a stepping stone for players trying to make national teams and compete in the World Cup.
