GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Mesa State College has extended early retirement offers to tenured professors who have taught there at least 15 years.
Qualifying professors would receive $1,000 for each year they’ve been with the college, plus $300 a month in medical benefits for two years if they leave by May.
Spokeswoman Dana Nunn says the college could save $400,000 in 2010-2011 and $1.6 million in 2012-2013 if professors accept the offer, but she didn’t say how many of the 40 eligible professors would have to accept. Two have submitted written requests to participate so far.
State legislators cut $4 million in funding for Mesa State for 2009-2010. Nunn says federal stimulus money will fill the gap but only for this coming school year.
