A training exercise turned into a real-life rescue Tuesday as two firefighters on the Aurora Fire Department’s Technical Rescue Team were injured in a fall at Castlewood Canyon in Douglas County.

Battalion Chief Mark Turley said one of the firefighters was airlifted by helicopter to a local hospital and that the second was driven to a hospital.

Turley said the firefighters were roped together at the time of the fall. One suffered facial lacerations, the other a broken leg.

The most positive aspect of a the situation was that trained firefighters were there who could assist their injured colleagues, said Turley.

“We got them out safely. Both are doing OK,” said Turley. “It’s a good outcome. It could have been much worse.”

At the time of the accident, said Turley, the firefighters were simulating a rescue of someone in the canyon.

At first, it was believed some type of equipment failure occurred, but that has been ruled out. The investigation is continuing.
