LIBREVILLE, Gabon — Hundreds of thousands of people lined streets in the capital Tuesday to say farewell to the late President Omar Bongo, whose coffin was paraded through the heart of a nation he was accused of pillaging during four decades of rule.

Nearly two dozen African heads of state, including several strongmen who have ruled for decades, lined up to pay their respects.

Also on hand were Nicolas Sarkozy and Jacques Chirac — France’s current and former presidents. Their presence, critics say, is evidence of France’s tacit backing of Bongo’s 41-year rule.
