BLACK HAWK — It’s one of those rare times when fake money comes in really handy: when you’re just learning how to gamble.

That’s why Sylvia Berrelleza was freely throwing chips on the roulette table.

“If it was real money, I’d be a lot more cautious,” she said. “I bet one, I bet three, I bet 18. Just special birthdays.”

Starting July 2, Colorado casinos will be offering more games, such as roulette and craps, as well as increasing their betting limits to $100. Voters approved the move when they passed Amendment 50 last fall.

Now some of those casinos are teaching their patrons how to be higher rollers.

“I have to watch it, that’s the whole excitement of watching the ball fall, it could be your slot,” Berrelleza said.

She was learning how to play roulette so that when it’s time, she can be a lot smarter with her money.

The Gilpin and The Lodge casinos are among the Black Hawk establishments doing a little teaching.

“People are typically intimidated by new games and new things,” said Ed Weisel, director of Colorado Table Games for the two casinos.

“We’d like them to have a chance to come up and play and see if they enjoy it, so it could be part of their experience.”
