To the powers of rock and roll: were you listening? That was calling out to you last Friday at . The multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and hipster heartthrob played his Denver gig with a cast on his left foot. Despite that injury, spirits were high. Kweller drew lots of laughs from his audience with stories and jokes, and amused with an impromptu cover of Van Halen’s “Jump.” Limping to the microphone, he strapped on an acoustic guitar for Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold.”

But his originals were what his adoring crowd came for. “Fight,” from his 2009 release “Changing Horses,” energized the crowd, but it was during “Penny on a Train Track,” the night’s last song, that Kweller invoked the healing power of music. “I can feel it getting better!” he screamed. Thanks, Ben, for a night of great songs that needed no healing whatsoever. — Kevin Galaba
