The Rockies’ days at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson are coming to an end.
In a move anticipated for months, the Rockies announced today the organization has sent at letter to the City of Tucson serving notice the Rockies plan to relocate their spring-training headquarters beginning in 2011.
That means that the Rockies’ final spring in Tucson — where they have trained since their inception in 1993 — will be in 2010.
According to a news release, the Rockies filed the notice with Tucson officials back on May 19.
“The City of Tucson has served as a tremendous host to our organization and fans since our inception,” Rockies president Keli McGregor said in a statement. “The citizens, businesses and City of Tucson have been our partners for the better part of two decades and we will always be grateful for the opportunities and commitment they have provided us.”
The Associated Press reported today that the Arizona Diamondbacks have also told Tucson and Pima County officials that they will move their spring training base out of Tucson Electric Park after 2010. The Diamondbacks have trained in Tucson since their inception in 1998.
Earlier this year, McGregor has said the Rockies and Diamondbacks are likely to share a complex in the Phoenix metropolitan area beginning in 2011. McGregor said the Rockies need an upgraded, year-round complex.
The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, east of Scottsdale, is one of three finalists to build a $100 million baseball stadium and practice facilities for the two teams.
When the Chicago White Sox vacated Tucson and began holding spring training in the Phoenix suburb of Glendale this spring, it left the Rockies and Diamondbacks as the only teams in Tucson. Both teams said the frequent travel up to Phoenix left them at a competitive disadvantage.
