COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A Colorado Springs man convicted of killing his former girlfriend will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

A judge sentenced 37-year-old Salvator Esquivel-Castillo to life in prison on Friday in the death of Jaclyn Funderburg. Judge David Shakes also added another 32 years for first-degree assault in which he was accused of breaking her jaw weeks before she died.

Funderburg’s body was found at the base of a cliff 11 days after she disappeared in 2007.

The two had a child together and the judge said Funderburg had returned to the relationship because she wanted her child to have a father. Shakes said the case was a “tragedy because it was so predictable.” He said he hopes it reminds people to seek help with domestic violence.
