Rickey Gates of Alamosa and Brandy Erholtz of Bailey won the men’s and women’s titles, respectively, at the 49th annual Mount Washington Road Race in New Hampshire, with Gates posting the eighth-fastest time ever in the event.
Gates won the 7.6-mile race in 59 minutes, 58 seconds, becoming the second American runner to break the one-hour barrier. The other was Matt Carpenter of Manitou Springs in 1993 and 1999.
“After placing third last year, I never wanted anything but first place this year,” Gates said.
Erholtz’s winning time was 1:10:53. Also finishing in the top 10 were Simon Gutierrez of Alamosa (fifth), Tommy Manning of Colorado Springs (seventh) and Matthew Russell of Boulder (ninth) in the men’s race, and Lisa Goldsmith of Nederland (fifth) and Tara Breed of Englewood (eighth) in the women’s race.
