LOS ANGELES — Kevin O’Neill returned to the college ranks Saturday when he was announced as Southern California’s basketball coach, taking over from Tim Floyd.

Floyd suddenly resigned June 9 amid allegations he paid to have O.J. Mayo delivered to the Trojans. He said he was quitting after four seasons because he no longer had enthusiasm for his job.

The 52-year-old O’Neill, a defense-oriented coach, was an assistant with the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies this past season. O’Neill is 171-180 in 12 seasons as a college head coach, including stints at Marquette, Tennessee and Northwestern.

Crew’s unbeaten streak ends

FRISCO, Texas — FC Dallas scored twice in the final 10 minutes, including Kenny Cooper‘s penalty kick in the 87th minute, for a 2-1 win over Columbus that snapped the Crew’s nine-game MLS unbeaten streak.

Brian Ching scored in the 89th minute to give host Houston a 1-1 tie against Real Salt Lake and extend the Dynamo’s unbeaten streak to a team record-tying 11 games.

• Seattle’s Fredy Montero scored off a defensive miscue to give the visiting Sounders a 1-1 tie with New York and extend the Red Bulls’ winless streak to eight games.

Pablo Campos converted a penalty kick and assisted on Ryan Johnson‘s sixth goal of the season to lead the host San Jose Earthquakes to a 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Klitschko stops Chagaev

GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany — Wladimir Klitschko again showed his dominance of the heavyweight division, stopping Ruslan Chagaev in a title fight before 61,000 fans at a German soccer stadium.

The IBF and WBO champion added the Ring Magazine belt to his haul, knocking Chagaev down in the second round and opening a cut over the Uzbekistan-born fighter’s left eye in the eighth.

Martin wins cycling stage

CRANS-MONTANA, Switzerland — Tony Martin of Germany won the eighth stage of the Tour de Suisse, and Tadej Valjavec of Slovenia clung to the overall lead.

Martin finished the 113-mile route in 4 hours, 12 minutes, 31 seconds to record the sixth stage win in the Tour de France warm-up. He edged Damiano Cunego of Italy, with Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland two seconds back.
