CRAIG, Colo.—A Bureau of Land Management firefighter has died after being struck by a falling tree northeast of Craig.

The BLM says 29-year-old Brett Stearns of Craig and a dozen other BLM firefighters were working to remove dead aspen trees that posed a threat to the public at Freeman Reservoir when he was struck by the tree around 4:30 p.m. Friday. He died at the scene. Other details weren’t immediately available Saturday.

Stearns was an engine captain and had worked in the fire program for the BLM Little Snake Field Office in Craig since 1999.

He is survived by his wife, parents, brother and half-sister.

A federal accident investigation team is reviewing what happened.
