A toddler on a walk with his mother drowned Sunday after he wound up in a fast-flowing creek near Vail and was swept downstream, authorities said.

The 2 1/2-year-old, identified as Colin Cassidy of Edgewater, was pulled from Gore Creek nearly 20 minutes later, and about a mile downstream, by a construction worker at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel construction site east of the Cascade Resort at 10:17 a.m.

Vail police said the mother, Sara Cassidy, who was also taking care of Colin’s baby sister at the time, did not see the toddler go in the water as they walked on the path near the Wren condominiums. The family, along with the boy’s father, Chris Cassidy, had been in Vail attending a lacrosse tournament.

Two passers-by administered CPR on the child until paramedics arrived, then the boy was rushed to Vail Valley Medical Center, according to police.
