Aurora’s Russ Clark was the only player to break par when the 52-year-old golfer shot a 3-under 67 to earn medalist honors at a U.S. Senior Open sectional quali- fier Monday at Fox Hill Country Club in Longmont.

Clark and Denver’s John Ward, who shot a 70, will be in the field of 156 for the U.S. Senior Open on July 30-Aug. 2 at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind.

Clark, who played in the 1980 U.S. Open, was helped by five birdies. Ward held off Denver’s Tom Wood- ard, whose 71 made him the first alternate.

Tolan earns first pro title.

Former University of Colorado golfer Derek Tolan won his first tournament as a professional with a record-setting victory Sunday in the San Juan Open in Farmington, N.M.

Tolan, 23, finished at 24-under-par 260 on the 6,750- yard course, a record card, and won $15,000.

“It’s a different feeling when you’re actually playing for money,” said Tolan, who turned pro just four weeks ago.

Michael Baird, another former CU golfer, finished fifth. CU assistant coach Jim Grady placed 12th and former Buff Pat Grady was 25th.

Red Bulls acquire Coundoul.

Former Rapids goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul will return to Major League Soccer after the New York Red Bulls acquired his rights from Colorado and signed him.

The Red Bulls gave the Rapids allocation money in the deal. Coundoul signed with the Rapids in the 2005 season. He has a 17-22-12 career record with a 1.16 goals-against average — second-lowest all time for goalies who have played a minimum of 4,000 minutes. He also has two caps for the Senegalese national team.

MLL salutes Outlaws’ Brown.

Major League Lacrosse named Denver Outlaws attackman Matt Brown its offensive player of the week. The former University of Denver star scored six goals — at least one goal in each quarter — in the Outlaws’ 20-16 victory over Toronto on Saturday, their sixth consecutive win.

AFA roster expands.

The Air Force hockey team has added eight freshmen to its roster for the 2009-10 season: defensemen Eric Artman of East Lansing, Mich., and Mike Walsh of Vernon Hills, Ill.; goalkeeper David Bosner of Chesterfield, Mo.; and forwards Clinton Bourbonais of Whitmore Lake, Mich., Stephen Carew and John Kurse of Eden Prairie, Minn., Kyle De Laurell of Mission Viejo, Calif., and Dan Durham of Chicago.

University of Denver assistant coach Devon Wills made seven saves in goal and former Cherry Creek High School star Caroline Cryer scored a team-high three goals to propel Team USA to the Federation of International Lacrosse Women’s World Cup title in Prague on Sunday. Sky Sox featuring fireworks.

The Triple-A Sky Sox have sold out tickets for Friday’s game against the Salt Lake Bees in Colorado Springs. But tickets for Saturday’s game remain available. Both Pacific Coast League games will have fireworks displays.
