An intense fire gutted a retail store in northwest Denver early this morning.

The fire broke out around 2:40 a.m. at Dollar City, 4855 Pecos St., said Lt. Phil Champagne, a Denver Fire Department spokesman.

When firefighters arrived at the burning building, the front windows had been blown out and witnesses told fire investigators they had heard several explosions, Champagne said.

Firefighters attacked the blaze for about an hour before the roof caved in from the intense heat.

“Luckily we didn’t have any firefighters inside at the time of the collapse,” Champagne said.

No one was injured in the fire.

Investigators this morning are trying to determine what started the blaze.

Sixty firefighters fought the fire.
