The Air Force hockey team, three-time defending Atlantic Hockey Association champion, will start its 2009-10 season Oct. 9 with a nonconference game in Minnesota against Bemidji State, also an NCAA Tournament team last season. The schedule was announced Tuesday.
The Falcons begin their AHA season at home Oct. 23, the start of a two-game series with Rochester Tech.
Air Force plays Colorado College on Feb. 5 and hosts the University of Denver on Feb. 6.
Coyotes, Lightning in Loveland.
The Phoenix Coyotes, coached by Wayne Gretzky, and the Tampa Bay Lightning will play an NHL preseason game at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland on Sept. 23.
CU golfer survives CGA scare.
Top-seeded Luke Symons advanced through the first round of head-to- head play at the Colorado Golf Association Match Play Championship at Bear Creek Golf Club when he rallied to defeat the No. 64 seed.
Symons, the defending champion and a senior on the University of Colorado golf team, won 1-up to eliminate Michael Tilghman of Castle Pines Golf Club. Tilghman was ahead 3-up after the first six holes, with Symons struggling at 8-over par. But Symons got hot and birdied five of his last 10 holes to advance.
Josh Berrelez of Boomerang Golf Links produced the upset of the day, defeating No. 5 seed Bill Fowler of Bear Creek on the 19th hole.
Lee advances at Meadow Hills.
Defending champion Somin Lee of Heather Ridge Country Club won a quarterfinal match to advance at the Colorado Women’s Golf Association Junior Match Play Championship at Meadow Hills Golf Course in Aurora.
Lee used three birdies to defeat Mary Good of Meridian 5-and-4. Shinwoo Lee of Kennedy Golf Course, the co-medalist in stroke play qualifying, defeated Kristin Kempton of Lone Tree Golf Club 2-and-1.
