State employees will face the first of what could be more than four furlough days Sept. 8.

Gov. Bill Ritter’s office Tuesday announced the furlough and said state workers will go a second year without pay raises.

Ritter last month asked state departments to submit plans to cut their general-fund budgets by 10 percent in the current year. His office now is asking departments to submit plans to cut an additional 1.8 percent from their general-fund budgets for the following fiscal year, which begins in July 2010.

In all, Ritter’s budget analysts are calling for departments to cut $715.5 million over two years.
