State Senate Minority Leader Josh Penry, coy for months on whether he plans to run for governor, kept up the “suspense” in a news release issued today.

Penry, a Grand Junction Republican, said he and his family for weeks have weighed whether to try to unseat Democratic Gov. Bill Ritter in 2010 and they’ll make their decision public on Saturday.

“It’s an important day for us, and we hope you will be part of it,” he said.

For months, political insiders predicted Penry would formally join the race sometime after the session ended in May.

Penry’s announcement is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday in front of the courthouse in his hometown of Grand Junction.

Two Republicans already have announced they are seeking the GOP nomination for governor, former Congressman Scott McInnis of Grand Junction and Evergreen businessman Dan Maes.

Penry worked as a staffer for McInnis in Congress.
