BATTLEMENT MESA, Colo.—State regulators will meet with residents of Battlement Mesa about a company’s plans to drill as many as 200 natural gas wells under the western Colorado community.

A meeting was planned at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Battlement Mesa Activity Center.

Residents of the community of about 5,500 want the Garfield County commissioners to review the plan by Antero Resources.

The county usually has little say over oil and gas drilling, which is regulated by the state. But the county’s original approval for the Battlement Mesa development included a provision requiring a special-use permit for any drilling in the community.

Battlement Mesa was intended to house Exxon workers during the oil shale boom that ended in the early 1980s.
