SAN DIEGO—An Army deserter who tried to take refuge in Canada to resist serving in the Iraq war has been released from a military brig in San Diego.
Defense attorney James Branum says Robin Long was released Thursday from the Naval brig at Miramar, where he was sent to serve a 15-month term after pleading guilty to desertion last August.
Long, who is originally from Boise, Idaho, was stationed at Fort Carson, Colo., before he fled to Canada in 2005.
He lost a court battle to stay in Canada and became the first of U.S. resister to the Iraq war to be deported back to the United States.
Long told a military judge at his sentencing that he left because of moral objections.
