AUSTIN, Texas—Lowell H. Lebermann Jr., a former University of Texas System regent and ex-Austin city councilman, has died.

A statement Friday from an executive assistant to Lebermann, Barbara Francis, said the businessman died Thursday in Aspen, Colo. No cause of death was immediately provided.

Lebermann was 70. He was legally blind and known for wearing an eye patch.

Lebermann was born in Dallas, but grew up in Commerce.

Lebermann attended UT Austin from 1957-1962, serving as student association president. He was elected as an Austin city councilman in the 1970s. Leberman failed in his 1983 bid for Austin mayor.

Lebermann served as a UT System regent from 1993-1999, appointed by Gov. Ann Richards.
