PALISADE, Colo.—Witnesses say a small earthquake triggered a rock slide that shaved off part of the Bookcliff Mountains, next to Mount Garfield, in western Colorado.
The National Earthquake Information Center in Golden says the epicenter of the 2.6-magnitude earthquake at 5:44 a.m. Thursday was a few miles south of Palisade.
Geophysicist Richard Buckmaster of the National Earthquake Information Center says the landslide is being blamed on the quake.
Witnesses say the slide took off a 50- to 75-yard section of the cliffs.
Lew Fraser says he saw the slide from a half-mile away. He says, “It looked like a tsunami with dirt.”
