BOULDER — Boulder police are investigating a report that two Hookah House customers were slipped a stimulant while smoking a bowl of apple-flavored tobacco at the University Hill business over the weekend.
A 22-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman, both of Longmont, called police early Saturday after smoking flavored tobacco between 12:30 and 1:45 a.m. at the Hookah House, 1325 Broadway St., unit 215, said police spokeswoman Sarah Huntley.
“They were having some unusual effects of feeling very awake and wired,” Huntley said.
Both of the complainants said they have smoked in the past — one reported smoking for more than six years and the other reported smoking flavored tobacco for two years, Huntley said.
“They both thought this was an unusual effect,” Huntley said.
The man and woman agreed to give urine samples to test whether they were slipped any other drugs, Huntley said. Those results could take “quite some time” to get back, she said.
Before the couple went to the Hookah House that night, Huntley said, they went to a University Hill sub shop and ordered iced tea. At the Hookah House, the woman ordered a chai tea and a Red Bull in addition to the tobacco, Huntley said.
“But she said she usually drinks the Red Bull and is aware of how it affects her,” Huntley said.
The man said he had half a cup of chai tea at the Hookah House.
“We don’t know if any crime was committed,” Huntley said.
Police are investigating the case as a possible second-degree assault.
