BOSTON — Lawmakers say they’ll try to restore $4 million in state funds for two zoos after operators suggested animals might have to be euthanized without the money.
Zoo New England warned last week that if the cuts stood, it would have to lay off most of its 165 employees and some of its 1,000 animals could possibly be destroyed.
It backed off from its claim about the animals over the weekend. Gov. Deval Patrick says no animal would be killed or was ever truly threatened with euthanasia.
