DENVER—The Colorado Avalanche have acquired defenseman Brian Fahey from the New York Rangers in exchange for defenseman Nigel Williams.

Twenty-eight-year-old Fahey scored 24 points in 66 games with AHL Hartford Wolf Pack last season. Fahey spent the 2007-08 season with the AHL Chicago Wolves, where he helped lead the club to the Calder Cup title with 10 points in the postseason.

The Glenview, Ill., native was Colorado’s seventh selection (119th overall) in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. He played at the University of Wisconsin, where he was named to the WCHA All-Rookie Team in 1999-2000.

Williams was Colorado’s second selection (second round, 51st overall) in the 2006 Entry Draft. He had 21 points in 70 games for the Lake Erie Monsters during last season.
