SAN DIEGO — Padres right-hander Jake Peavy had his right ankle removed from a protective boot Thursday and will begin a rehabilitation program.

Peavy, who has been on the 15-day disabled list since June 13 with a strained tendon in his right ankle, threw for the first time since going on the DL and said he feels well.

“I’m just walking around pain-free and feeling like I’m ready to get strong and work toward getting out on the field,” Peavy said.

The 2007 NL Cy Young Award winner received a clean bill of health from team doctors to begin the rehabilitation process, although there was no timetable for his return.

Former gym owner says he never gave Clemens HGH

HOUSTON — A former gym owner in the Houston area said he never supplied Roger Clemens with performance-enhancing drugs and is looking forward to meeting with a grand jury investigating whether the seven-time Cy Young Award winner lied to Congress.

Kelly Blair received a subpoena Tuesday and will testify before a grand jury in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 4. Blair is the former owner of 1-on-1 Elite Personal Fitness in Pasadena. The FBI met with Blair in March 2008, about a month after opening its perjury investigation into Clemens.

“I did not supply Roger Clemens (with) growth hormone,” Blair said.

Trainer Brian McNamee has told Congress and federal investigators he injected Clemens with performance-enhancing drugs from 1998 to 2001 or 2002. Clemens has denied those claims.

“I’m ready for this to be over with, man,” Blair said. “I have a lot to say in front of a federal grand jury. I am really excited about that.”

Footnotes.

Mets pitcher John Maine, out since early June because of pain in his right shoulder, could be ready to throw in a minor-league game within 10 days, according to GM Omar Minaya.

• The Cubs signed former Blue Jays closer B.J. Ryan to a minor-league deal, hoping to add another left-hander to their bullpen. Ryan was 1-1 with a 6.53 ERA and gave up 22 hits, including five home runs, and 17 walks in 20 2/3 innings.

• The Brewers probably aren’t going to get starter Dave Bush (triceps) back next week as hoped. The team decided to send the right-hander for another medical exam a day after he had a poor showing in a minor-league rehab start.
