A new technology incubator has launched with a mission to foster entrepreneurs and start-ups that are developing new technologies for clean energy.
The Denver-based CleanLaunch Technology Incubator will work with the Governor’s Energy Office and the Colorado Cleantech Industry Association to promote advances in Colorado’s clean-technology industry.
CleanLaunch chief executive Stephen Miller said the idea for the incubator, which officially launched Friday, had been in the works for 14 months.
“It’s been a labor of love. There aren’t many times in your life that you get to do something in business that has a broader impact for entrepreneurs as well as for the environment,” he said.
CleanLaunch incubates clients that are “resident” or “virtual,” and serves companies in any location and at any stage of growth.
Both types of clients have the chance to network with other entrepreneurs.
CleanLaunch also helps assemble a board of advisers unique to each client to give expert advice on legal, scientific and business issues.
Resident clients will have access to offices in Stapleton or Jefferson County with fully furnished suites at low rates.
CleanLaunch’s first client company is a virtual one — Greenwood Village-based Bye Energy, a 1-year-old company that integrates clean technologies with an aviation focus.
“We’re very grateful to (CleanLaunch) for helping get the message out with regard to alternative energy,” said chief executive George Bye.
He said CleanLaunch has already assisted him in identifying a board of advisers and will help Bye Energy gain visibility in the alternative energy sector.
“This organization was (founded) because of a shared concern and a shared focus on a very important issue,” he said.
CleanLaunch was founded by automotive company Burt Technologies, accounting firm Clifton Gunderson, law firm Fairfield and Woods P.C. and the South Metro Denver Chamber of Commerce.
Peter Edwards, a partner at Fairfield and Woods, said the firm has always had a commitment to clean technology, so he was “very enthusiastic” about helping to develop the project.
“What makes CleanLaunch unique is that it’s not only trying to give these new ventures a home, but also giving advice, assistance, counseling and consulting … putting them in touch with the right people,” he said.
