TELLURIDE, Colo.—An avid cyclist from the Telluride area has been killed after straying into traffic while riding his bike.
Authorities say 64-year-old “Captain” Jack Carey died Friday while cycling with his wife. Investigators say Carey turned his head and drifted into the path of a truck.
San Miguel County Coroner Bob Dempsey says Carey died seconds after the accident, which threw him 100 feet.
The long-bearded cyclist was a fixture in Telluride for more than three decades, known for snagging the first ski chairs of the season.
He’s the second person to die in a bicycle accident in a week in the Telluride area. Six days before, 51-year-old Rittner “Ritt” Lewis of Everson, Wash., lost control of his mountain bike on Telluride Trail and died of head injuries.
