AURORA, Colo.—Aurora city officials have warned 70 employees that they might lose their jobs at year’s end to cover an $8 million budget shortfall.

Budget officer Jason Batchelor says nothing has been finalized. The city council will receive a preliminary budget in September and vote on the final 2010 budget in November.

But Batchelor says city officials thought it was right to let employees know they might be laid off.

More than half the reductions would be in the library department. Those 40 jobs could be saved if a ballot measure that would create a separate funding source for libraries passes in November.

Uniformed police and fire personnel wouldn’t be laid off.
