The director of Denver’s Department of Excise and Licenses told City Council members this week that she is leaving to take a job as deputy assistant solicitor at the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington.

In an e-mail to council members, Awilda Marquez said she gave notice to Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper on Monday.

Penny May, deputy director of the department, will take over on an interim basis, said Eric Brown, the mayor’s spokesman.
