LINCOLN, Neb.—Confirmed swine flu cases have now been reported in 34 of Nebraska’s 93 counties.

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services says 313 cases have been confirmed, as of Wednesday. Sixteen of those people have been hospitalized. One has died. The death of a Custer County woman in her 50s who had other medical problems was reported earlier this month.

Nearly three-quarters of the victims have been 24 years old or younger.

The virus, also known as H1N1 flu, can cause a fever of more than 100 degrees, body aches, coughing, a sore throat, respiratory congestion and, in some cases, vomiting and diarrhea.
