Mosquitoes from three traps in Fort Collins and one in Loveland have tested positive for the West Nile virus, according to the Larimer County Department of Health and Environment.
The mosquitoes were collected last week.
Dr. Adrienne LeBailly, director of the department, said residents must be cautious this time of year.
“This is the time of summer when the number of infected mosquitoes can increase quickly, and unfortunately, the Culex mosquitoes which transmit the West Nile virus represent a high proportion of all the mosquitoes present this year,” she said.
LeBailly said that 75 percent of the mosquitoes collected so far this week in Fort Collins and 82 percent of those trapped in Loveland have been Culex mosquitoes.
