WASHINGTON — Americans cut their borrowing a fifth time in a row during June, reiterating a caution by consumers that could haunt the economy’s recovery.

Outstanding consumer credit fell more than double expected, decreasing at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.9 percent to $2.503 trillion, the Federal Reserve said.
