The seasons are about to change on the Upper Arkansas River.
Whitewater enthusiasts will want to cram in one more visit to the nation’s most popular rafting destination before the bottom falls out on the annual water-flow agreement between Colorado State Parks and the Department of Natural Resources.
According to Arkansas Headwaters program assistant Rose Bayless, rivers are scheduled to linger around 700 cubic feet per second at the Wellsville gauge downstream of Salida through Saturday, before ramping down to the “native flow” more suitable to fishing (now around 500 cfs). Heavy rains, of course, could change everything, but otherwise, count on swapping paddles for fishing poles as of Sunday on the Ark.
