SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Coach Mike Singletary might wait until Thursday before deciding on a starting quarterback for the 49ers’ exhibition opener against Denver.

Shaun Hill or Alex Smith? The two have been fairly even through the first 10 days of training camp, and both should get plenty of chances against the Broncos on Friday night.

“We’ll talk about it prior to the game, figure it out,” Singletary said Monday. “We’re in no rush to do that.”

Smith might have taken a step back Monday. He got kicked out of practice for throwing an interception after the coach issued a warning about sloppy ball-handling.

“You can’t throw the ball into town meetings,” Smith said.

Panthers receiver Smith injures right shoulder

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Panthers receiver Steve Smith, who had 78 catches for 1,421 yards and six touchdowns last season, was carted to the locker room with a right shoulder injury. X-rays were negative, but general manager Marty Hurney was uncertain how long the four-time Pro Bowl receiver will be out.

Footnotes.

Quarterback Drew Brees returned to Saints training camp after leaving the team over the weekend to attend to the death of his mother, Mina Brees, who died Friday in Grand County. Also, the Saints placed tight end Dan Campbell (knee) on injured reserve.

• Buccaneers receiver Antonio Bryant has a torn meniscus in his left knee that will sideline him for the remainder of training camp.

• The Rams will be without No. 1 receiver Donnie Avery for four to six weeks because of a foot injury.

• Eagles backup quarterback Kevin Kolb (knee) and former Pro Bowl defensive end Trent Cole (shoulder) were injured during practice.
