United Launch Alliance is looking for a location to consolidate its Colorado operations.
The Centennial-based aerospace firm, a joint effort between Lockheed Martin and Boeing Co., wants one location for its 1,800 employees. It is considering building a new campus, as well as looking at existing spaces.
“We’re exploring all the alternatives that would move the workforce closer together in the south metro area,” said Chris Chavez, a spokesman for ULA.
David Hazlett, a broker with Colliers Bennett & Kahnweiler Inc. working with ULA, said developers were sent requests for proposals on developing a new campus, but all options will be considered, even staying put.
“We’ve got a fair amount of time to go through the process,” he said. “We’re just evaluating every option out there and what makes the most sense as they move forward.”
Chavez declined to say how much space the company is seeking, but people in the real-estate community said it’s at least 400,000 square feet. He also declined to identify specific locations, but one broker said the company had been looking at a building at a property on the north end of the Meridian International Business Center.
The company’s employees are now scattered throughout three buildings it leases in Centennial and Littleton.
“A deal like this would be great for Denver,” said Todd Roebken, managing director of Jones Lang LaSalle. “There’s not a lot going on, especially at this scale.”
ULA plans to lay off 224 employees in October, including 87 in Denver. Those affected will be notified Oct. 1, Chavez said.
“One of the reasons for our creation was to save the government money in launch services,” he said. “Through our consolidation, we’ve been able to accomplish that.”
ULA was formed in 2007. It has had 29 successful space launches.
