Colorado State wide receiver Rashaun Greer and Air Force guard Nick Charles were named to watch lists for two of college football’s highest honors.
Greer, a senior, was one of 37 players tabbed for the Biletnikoff Award watch list, for the nation’s best wide receiver. Charles, a senior, was put on the Outland Trophy list for the nation’s best interior lineman, on either side of the ball. Former Falcons standout Chad Hennings is a past winner of the Outland.
Burgundy-White game at AFA.
For a third consecutive year, the Avalanche will hold its annual Burgundy-White preseason scrimmage at Air Force’s Cadet Ice Arena, the team said.
The Avs will bring a complete roster of players to the Sept. 16 game, an intrasquad, three-period, full-pad scrimmage. The 6 p.m. game is open to the public. Tickets are available at beginning Saturday.
The game will help raise money to benefit military families and the Avs’ youth hockey program.
Outlaws rookie Hardy honored.
Denver Outlaws midfielder Dan Hardy has been named Major League Lacrosse rookie of the year.
Drafted eighth overall out of Syracuse, Hardy had eight goals and eight assists this season. He received 17 points in the voting, while teammate Max Seibald finished second with 15 points.
Hardy is the first Outlaw to win the award, which is based on votes by MLL coaches and general managers.
The top-seeded Outlaws next play Aug. 22 in the postseason semifinals against Boston. The winner plays in the championship game Aug. 23 against the winner of the Toronto-Long Island matchup.
Mammoth to host memorial tournament.
The Colorado Mammoth of the National Lacrosse League will help host the Colin Cassidy Memorial Lacrosse Tournament on Sept. 12 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, an event in memory of a 2-year-old boy who died in Vail last June.
The tournament features men’s and women’s adult divisions, high school and youth teams, and clinics with pro lacrosse players.
“This lacrosse tournament is a way to honor Colin’s memory and bring the entire Colorado lacrosse community together to show its support for the Cassidy family,” Mammoth assistant general manager Bill Hall said. Proceeds go to the Colin L. Cassidy Memorial Fund to help local charities.
Anschutz added to bid committee.
Phil Anschutz, who was the owner of the Rapids when the team joined Major League Soccer in 1996, was added to the board of directors for the USA Bid Committee, a group trying to bring the World Cup to the United States in 2018 or 2022, according to Soccer America magazine.
He joins Univision CEO Joe Uva, New England Revolution and Patriots owner Robert Kraft, U.S. Soccer Foundation president Ed Foster-Simeon, University of Miami president Donna Shalala, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Landon Donovan, Mia Hamm and former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.
Humphries returns as D-League coach.
Former University of Colorado standout Jay Humphries agreed to return for a second year as coach of the Reno Bighorns in the NBA Development League. Humphries, the 13th pick overall in the 1984 NBA draft, led the expansion Bighorns to a 25-25 record last season. Bighorns president Stuart Katzoff said Humphries is well-respected around the league.
