FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Police have launched an investigation and are helping brides find dresses after a bridal shop closed and failed to deliver wedding gowns that were bought and paid for.

Police spokeswoman Rita Davis said employees of Mountain Avenue Bridal and police are working with brides to find an appropriate dress from 50 sample dresses seized at the shop. Only one bride has taken a dress, while two have chosen veils.

A message could not be left Wednesday at a number listed for store owner Patty Burling because the voice mailbox was full . The Coloradoan newspaper reported similar occurrences involving prom dresses at another shop owned by Burling called Bella Novia Bridal Boutique in Glenrock, Wyo., that closed earlier this year.

Davis declined to say what charges Burling may face.
