DENVER—Mexico’s sanitary risk agency recommended banning the importation of JBS Swift ground beef out of concerns of E. Coli contamination.

In a statement Wednesday, the Mexican health agency recommended the ban until it receives assurances the meat is safe to eat and the company’s Greeley plant is inspected.

Mexico has recalled JBS Swift ground beef from stores and importers. In June, JBS Swift recalled 380,000 pounds of beef due to connections with outbreaks of E. coli.

A company spokesman did not return a message seeking comment.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported at least 23 people in nine states were sickened by E. coli associated with the contaminated meat. No cases have been reported in Mexico.
