Marian Barker of Lubbock, Texas, shot a 3-over-par 75 to finish atop a U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur sectional qualifier Wednesday at The Club at Pradera in Parker. She edged Greeley’s Kim Eaton by a stroke.
Barker and Eaton are two of nine golfers who qualified for the national tournament, which will be played on Sept. 12-17 in Hot Springs, Va.
Cougars land CSU’s Cornell.
Former Colorado State women’s basketball forward Juanise Cornell spurned offers to play at Division I California, Arizona and Weber State and will instead transfer from the Rams to D-II Colorado Christian in Lakewood.
As a junior last season, the 5-foot-11 forward led CSU in field goals was second in rebounds. Her 19 points and 12 rebounds in January paced CSU over Air Force.
She said of her transfer to Colorado Christian, “I love the small community as well as the friendly atmosphere that CCU has to offer.”
Metro women, Fort Lewis men in top 10.
The Metro State women’s soccer team will start its season ranked No. 3 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll. The Roadrunners last season were ranked for 13 consecutive weeks and moved up from No. 14 to No. 3 in the final ranking. Seattle Pacific is No. 1.
In the men’s NSCAA preseason poll, Fort Lewis will start ranked No. 10. The Metro State men’s team is No. 21. Cal State Dominguez Hills was picked No. 1.
Eagles retain Tobler.
The Colorado Eagles of the Central Hockey League re-signed veteran forward Ryan Tobler. It was the team’s final veteran contract before the upcoming season.
Tobler scored a career-high 38 goals last season for the Eagles and tied teammate Greg Pankewicz for the league lead.
Springs goalie leads U.S. hockey squad.
Cody Campbell, a 17-year-old from Colorado Springs, made 20 saves to lead the U.S. Under-18 men’s hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Finland in the Ivan Hlinka Tournament in Slovakia. The U.S. finishes round-robin play today against Slovakia.
